How to choose your first Tanzania safari

Daniel Mwita · April 3, 2025

Tanzania has dozens of parks and hundreds of operators. Before you compare prices, decide what kind of experience you're actually planning for.

Start With the Experience, Not the Package

Most first-time Tanzania travellers start by comparing itineraries and prices. The better question is: what kind of safari do you actually want?

The northern circuit, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, is the most established. It has the infrastructure, the iconic wildlife, and the highest concentration of operators. It is not a secret, but it earns its reputation.

The southern circuit, Selous, Ruaha, Mikumi, is quieter and wilder. Fewer vehicles on tracks, larger landscapes, and a more remote feel. Logistics are more complex but the payoff is significant.

Fixed departure vs private safari. Fixed departures work because they create certainty and social energy. Private safaris work because they give you total flexibility. Cost is not the only variable, pace matters as much as price.

What to ask any operator: What is the maximum group size per vehicle? What is the guide's experience level? Are park fees included in the quote? What accommodation standard is included? What happens if a departure falls short of minimum numbers?
